I've had similar experiences, perhaps never quite so pointed as your moment in the car, but enough to empathize. And I think you make a great point about how the world might be different if religion were a choice; unfortunately, that runs counter to the One True Faith idea most organized religions espouse. That was very hard for me, I have a big mouth. But my best friend's parents were Mormon and I can't tell you how often I got that silence. Fortunately most Mormons (these included) were polite enough not to start yelling at me in the car!! But they did, I found out, actively discourage their daughter from hanging out with me. They never went so far as your friends, but, similar tactics. Keep the child from hanging out with the "rebel" child and we'll keep ours safe! It's utter stupidity, but I know so many Christian and non-Christian parents who abide by it on many levels. Drives me absolutely up the wall. I get particularly incensed when an adult does something like this to a child. The good news is he helped you get clear real quicklike. Assholes do that for us.
