Adbusters Wins Legal Victory
“Adbusters Media Foundation, the publisher of Adbusters magazine, has won an important appeal in its case against the CBC and Global Television Network. Adbusters initiated a landmark legal action against the media companies for refusing to sell airtime to Adbusters for its social marketing television campaigns.
In a unanimous decision released on Friday, April 3, the BC Court of Appeal overturned a previous BC Supreme Court ruling. Adbusters can now take its case against the media conglomerates to the BC Supreme Court.
Since 1989 Adbusters has attempted to purchase airtime from major commercial broadcasters in order to air its socially-minded public service spots. Routinely denied by network executives in Canada and the US, Adbusters is often left with little to no explanation as to why these citizen-produced messages are being censored. The case against the CBC and Global Television Network Inc. was brought about because Adbusters believes that the Canadian Charter grants every Canadian the right to access the public airwaves; to walk into their local TV stations and purchase 30-seconds of airtime under the same rules and conditions as advertising agencies do.”

Whoa, I remember reading about this back in college. I’m impressed they’ve had the commitment to pursue their case for so long. The unanimous decision is also impressive.

Sex Work And Honesty: The Correct Answer
“How are you doing tonight?” “What are you doing right now?” Simple enough questions aren’t they? But when they’re coming from a client the answers gets complicated. To ensure a good call I don’t always give an honest answer.
For the how am I doing question I always say “I’m doing good”. Saying I’m fine sounds too generic. And on the whole I am doing good so it’s truthful. It’s positive and vague enough that a client can move into his fantasy or chit chat easily.
Saying how I really feel breaks the fantasy girl illusion. Guys aren’t calling to hear that I’m tired, grumpy, depressed, distracted or filled with PMS. Though they have different tastes all clients are calling for attention. Putting my “best face forward” puts the focus back on them. After all, it is their call and my role is to entertain them.
If I tell clients I’m reading a book they often apologize for interrupting and sometimes try to cancel the call. Interestingly if I tell them I’m reading a magazine they don’t say that. Maybe they think of it as “lighter” reading and so it can be more easily interrupted? I don’t know.
When I tell them I’m knitting most clients don’t comment and go right into the call. The ones that do comment tend to ask “did you say you were knitting” and I’ll tell them yes. Sometimes they’ll comment that they’re grandmothers knit and then move on.
When I’m in a cranky mood and know my standard “I’m doing good” answer will come off as fake I ignore their question entirely. You’d think that would come across as rude. But it surprisingly works really well. I just talk about them and they don’t notice that I never answered their question. I like to think of it as truth by omission.

U.S. Judge Rules Md. County’s Strip Club Law Unconstitutional
“A federal judge Thursday struck down a Prince George’s County law that would have erased from the map most strip clubs that serve alcohol.
U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis ruled that the Maryland Legislature went too far with a law that would ban exotic dancing, peep shows and lap dances anywhere with a liquor license, finding it would place unconstitutional limits on free speech while violating the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection.

Legislators had sculpted a very particular grandfather clause into the bill, allowing any nightclub that received an adult entertainment license before Aug. 15, 1981, to remain in business.
The federal judge ruled foul, because not so coincidentally the former Maryland state senator Tommie Broadwater owns a gentlemen’s club that received a license on Aug. 14, 1981.”
How sleazy is that? I’m glad the club fought it.

“Spanking is stressful at first, but it could bring consenting couples closer together. That’s the implication of two studies of hormonal changes associated with sadomasochistic (S&M) activities including spanking, bondage and flogging.
Brad Sagarin at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and colleagues measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol in 13 men and women at an S&M party in Arizona, before, during and after participating in activities. During S&M scenes, cortisol rose significantly in those receiving stimulation, but dropped back to normal within 40 minutes if the scene went well. There was no change in those inflicting the activity.
At an S&M event in Colorado, testosterone was measured in 45 men and women. It increased significantly in receiving women only. Donatella Marazziti of the University of Pisa, Italy, says the boost may help women cope with the aggressive nature of S&M activities, or that it could be another sign of stress. In both studies, couples who said the party went well also reported increases in relationship closeness (Archives of Sexual Behavior, DOI: 10.1007/s10508-008-9374-5).”
