From MSMBC:
Sex and booze figured in Egyptian rites
BALTIMORE - Today, it sounds like a spring-break splurge on the order of “Girls Gone Wild”: Drink huge quantities of beer, get wasted, indulge in gratuitous sex and pass out — then wake up the next morning with the music blaring and your friends praying that everything will turn out all right.
But back in 1470 B.C., this was the agenda for one of ancient Egypt’s most raucous rituals, the “festival of drunkenness,” which celebrated nothing less than the salvation of humanity. Archaeologists say they have found evidence amid the ruins of a temple in Luxor that the annual rite featured sex, drugs and the ancient equivalent of rock ‘n’ roll.

From The Stonewall Riot and Its Aftermath:
On Friday evening, June 27, 1969, the New York City tactical police force raided a popular Greenwich Village gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. Raids were not unusual in 1969; in fact, they were conducted regularly without much resistance. However, that night the street erupted into violent protest as the crowds in the bar fought back. The backlash and several nights of protest that followed have come to be known as the Stonewall Riots.
Prior to that summer there was little public expression of the lives and experiences of gays and lesbians. The Stonewall Riots marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement that has transformed the oppression of gays and lesbians into calls for pride and action. In the past twenty-five years we have all been witness to an astonishing flowering of gay culture that has changed this country and beyond, forever.
Wikipedia has a Stonewall entry as well if you’d like to read more. Though Wiki’s entry said the Stonewall was the 28th of July, the press clippings from the earlier link said the 27th.

From the History Channel:
“While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial — which probably occurred around 270 A.D — others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to ‘christianize’ celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival.”

I love sex in history articles. This story is very interesting. From UCLA International Institute:

In medieval Japan, sexual entertainers and their customers enjoyed great freedoms until a growing orthodoxy stifled their trade, Janet Goodwin tells a UCLA audience.

From the Sun Sentinel:
The 70-year-old grandmother had collected fine antiques for decades. And when her son requested that she select a few naughtier baubles for his apartment, Wilzig responded by purchasing a Japanese pillow book or shunga — 25 brilliantly colored pictures depicting the more carnal of delights. “It was historically given to couples on their wedding night,” explains Wilzig. “It contains illustrations of various positions so they would know how to please each other.”

I’ve been a fan of Annie Sprinkle for several years now. By chance I stumbled across a thesis written about her the other day while doing research of my own. (I was researching hormones for a transgendered client.)
While I thought I was familiar with most of her work Sheila Thomas’ study really opened my eyes to her whole career.
Speaking the Unspeakable: Annie Sprinkle’s “Prostitute Performances” A Thesis by Sheila Marie Thomas is a well documented study. It’s an excellent introduction to those unfamiliar with her; for fans, it’s more of a collective, delving into detail about familiar performances.
