Resolution To Legalize Religious Intolerance

State bill proposes Christianity be Missouri’s official religion

Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state’s official “majority” religion.

House Concurrent Resolution 13 has is pending in the state legislature.

Many Missouri residents had not heard about the bill until Thursday.

Karen Aroesty of the Anti-defamation league, along with other watch-groups, began a letter writing and email campaign to stop the resolution.

The resolution would recognize “a Christian god,” and it would not protect minority religions, but “protect the majority’s right to express their religious beliefs.

The resolution also recognizes that, “a greater power exists,” and only Christianity receives what the resolution calls, “justified recognition.”

I’m sure the fundies who pressured this to be written are humping their bibles in ecstasy right now. As a Pagan this both disgusts and scares me. I agree with Gloria Brame’s blog comments “As if this isn’t bad enough….as my husband pointed out earlier, with Scalia and Alito on the bench, if this ever went to the Supreme Court, Missouri just might win.”As a former Missouri resident I am sadly not surprised.

You really get that excited about something that only gets filed by one of those bozos?

I remember a bill in the same legislature that would have criminalized sneezing in restaurants - and that one got a hearing.

    I’m another former resident.

bk-You know it’s weird what sets off one’s buttons. Some days I’ll read about plenty of depressing or enraging news and be ok. I’ve done some research and this certainly isn’t the first time a bill like this has come up. But something about the wording of this bill really makes my blood boil.

I’m a Christian and quite offended by this nonsense. It’s about choice and free will and keeping church and state separated goes both ways. If these idiots don’t watch it and they actually get what they want they will one day regret it when the government turns around and attempts to dictate issues within Christianity that is none of its business. To keep the government out of the church the church must stay out of the government.

G-I’m with you. I think as one brach of Christians, the conservative fundalmentists, push to have their sect in control it will hurt other religions, including other Christians.

And I think Jesus, who I believe was a radical political, religious activist, would be pretty pissed about what people are doing in his names these days.
