Homeless Veterans

Homeless veterans

From Yahoo News:
Study: 1 out of 4 homeless are veterans
“Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though they are only 11 percent of the general adult population, according to a report to be released Thursday.

And homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.

(snip)

Some advocates say the early presence of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a decade for the lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they started showing up among the homeless. Advocates worry that intense and repeated deployments leave newer veterans particularly vulnerable.”

Jeez, this is sad. But it’s also really upsetting. What happened to “support our troops”?

“Support the troops” and “pro-life” are alike: “pro-life” politicians don’t much care about children once they’re out of the womb, and lots of people (namely politicians, again) who cry “support our troops” actually mean “support our war” and couldn’t give a damn about the troops as individual human beings.

I’m a little grumpy this morning. Stupid government.

That because it was never really about supporting the troops, it’s about supporting the war.

Have you hugged a Veteran today?
It’s up to us to support our troops past and present. They are fellow citizens and humans. Don’t be cruel to our men and women who can no longer maintain in “normal” society. Kicking down a couple bucks to the homelss isn’t going to hurt, and the least we can do is remember to share our smiles and kind words. Every little act of kindness helps. For real.
These are the blog posts that really make me respect you Vixen. Never give in. Never give up.
