Fanny Hill

Tipping the Velvet

Davies turns to raunchy 18th century classic

The BBC has asked Andrew Davies to develop a TV drama script based on the raunchy 18th century novel Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure.

Mr Davies is working on early draft scripts for a TV adaptation of John Cleland’s book, which is possibly the most sexually explicit classic novel in the English literary canon.

This looks promising. The original Fanny Hill was the first erotic film I ever watched.

I was a girl and had snuck into the living room while my parents were asleep. Originally I had planned to watch MTV-this was back when they actually played music videos. This soon bored me and I started flipping channels. I’m not sure but my memory tells me Fanny was on HBO because in my mind it was the Adult channel.

I remember scrunching close to the tv with the sound as low as possible so my parents wouldn’t hear the moaning. Watching Fanny Hill now it almost seems tame in spots. But back then I was both shocked and excited. It was all so new, so thrilling, and so naughty. I hope the new film version will be just that.
