Blog Against Theocracy

Richard Dawkins

The Lizard Queen turned me onto the Blog Against Theocracy event happening. Her response and Evil Bender’s post are good reads. I thought I’d join in.

I’m currently reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins and loving it. While I am Pagan I still find his arguments very compelling. Polytheism doesn’t escape his criticism but compared to monotheism it comes out relatively unscathed.

The more I read of his book the more I believe the President of the US should be an atheist. Now I know the likelihood of that isn’t high in the current political climate. But just imagine if the President was a hardcore atheist instead of a hardcore fundamentalist. To take the vision further imagine if overzealous faith was a campaign killer. Candidates throughout Congress and local seats would bend over backwards declaring their faith a private matter that in no way influenced their duty to this country.

Many issues would cease to be so controversial if the people who ran the government weren’t making decisions according to their faith. Abortion, birth control, sex education, pornography, gay marriage, gay adoption, assisted suicide, stem cell research, the teaching of evolution just to name a few. What a wonderful country that would be.

And on a somewhat related note-Does anyone else think Dawkins is hot? Those sexy eyes, that little smirk, that dedication to being an activist. Yum.
