News Roundup

From AOL News:
Chernobyl Cleanup Survivor’s Message for Japan: ‘Run Away as Quickly as Possible’
“Natalia Manzurova, one of the few survivors among those directly involved in the long cleanup of Chernobyl, was a 35-year-old engineer at a nuclear plant in Ozersk, Russia, in April 1986 when she and 13 other scientists were told to report to the wrecked, burning plant in the northern Ukraine.

(snip)

What message do you have for Japan?
Run away as quickly as possible. Don’t wait. Save yourself and don’t rely on the government because the government lies. They don’t want you to know the truth because the nuclear industry is so powerful.”

Wow, this interview racked up my paranoia a notch. Manzurova makes several excellent points though.

From BBC News:
Libya: Obama defends war, insists US role is limited
“US President Barack Obama has defended the first war launched under his presidency, insisting US military involvement in Libya will be limited.

(snip)

He said that to broaden the aims of the military mission in Libya to overthrowing Col Gadaffi would be a mistake. The US, he said, had gone down that road in Iraq and could not afford the cost in lives, time and money again”

I don’t believe this for a minute. Remember when the Iraq War was only going to last for six months? As long as Libya has oil the US will be involved.

From MSNBC:
Whistle-blowing witch grounded by TSA
“Here’s a situation for all you aspiring managers: If you were the boss at a U.S. government agency and one of your employees complained that she was afraid of a co-worker’s religious practices, what would you do?

Would it change your decision if the religion were Wicca, and the employee feared her co-worker because she thought she might cast a spell on her?

Here’s how the Transportation Security Administration handled it:

It fired the witch.

(snip)

Immediately after the complaint about casting spells, Smith’s personnel file started to bulge with disciplinary actions. A training coordinator wrote her up for having a negative attitude. A supervisor warned her for not properly checking a boarding pass. She was eight minutes late to work. She was accused of insubordinate behavior for yelling at supervisors when they told her she’d have to work a 16-hour shift because she was the only woman on duty to pat down female passengers.

On April 2, the personnel specialist at Albany, Robert Farrow, sent Johansson an e-mail about Smith. It read, in full, “Hammer Time.” Johansson replied, “Not yet … not enough.””

As a Pagan and witch myself this article is upsetting. Then again, this is the TSA after all-should we really be surprised that they treat their employees as shitty as they do airline passengers?

From PBS:
Remembering Geraldine Ferraro, First Female Major Ticket VP Candidate
“The former Democratic vice presidential nominee died Saturday, after a long struggle with multiple myeloma. She was a congresswoman from New York when Walter Mondale tapped her as his running mate in 1984. It made her the first female vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket in U.S. history.

In a nationally televised debate in October 1984, she faced then Vice President George H.W. Bush. What began as an exchange about foreign policy ended up being about much more.”

I also think it’s important to point out that it was Ferraro and not Palin who made history as the first female vice presidential candidate.

From The Independent:
Vatican confirms report of sexual abuse and rape of nuns by priests in 23 countries
“The Catholic Church in Rome made the extraordinary admission yesterday that it is aware priests from at least 23 countries have been sexually abusing nuns.

(snip)

Confidential Vatican reports obtained by the National Catholic Reporter, a weekly magazine in the US, have revealed that members of the Catholic clergy have been exploiting their financial and spiritual authority to gain sexual favours from nuns, particularly those from the Third World who are more likely to be culturally conditioned to be subservient to men.

(snip)

In extreme instances, the priests had made nuns pregnant and then encouraged them to have abortions.”

“In extreme instances”?! The whole thing sounds extreme to me. Shame on the Catholic Church!

You know what the sad part of that TSA article was? My first reaction was ‘Damn, why did anyone know she was a witch? I never tell my coworkers about that, or discuss religion, ever’.

Then I got mad, because I just recalled a conversation on FB with a cousin who was complaining about the discrimination against Christians by the US government. Because this sort of thing totally happens to Christians these days.
