Waiter, there’s a potential carcinogen in my soup
“The exposure to BPA from canned food “is far more extensive” than from plastic bottles, said Shanna Swan, a professor and researcher at the University of Rochester in New York. “It’s particularly concerning when it’s lining infant formula cans.”
BPA is the key compound in epoxy resin linings that keep food fresher longer and prevents it from interacting with metal and altering the taste. It has been linked in some studies of rats and mice to not only cancer but also obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
(snip)
Even so, many parents remain concerned. Just what is an acceptable amount of BPA to ingest? Should we be knowingly ingesting a potential carcinogen into our bodies, even at minuscule levels? Why aren’t there better, cheaper alternatives?”
Why aren’t there indeed. I try to cut BPA out of my diet as much as possible. I’ve read some suggestions that BPA could increase problems associated with auto immune disorders. Is that paranoia, truth or somewhere in between? I don’t know but the more I read about BPA the more I feel it should be avoided.

Get Ready to Be Groped Much Harder by Airport Security
“While turning down the full body scan has always resulted in a patdown, there’s a newer “enhanced” screening procedure that’s being tested at some airports if you opt out, like at Boston’s Logan airport. Here’s what’s it like described on Daily Kos:
Two (female) TSA officers stepped over to me, and gave me the new procedure, which included touching my face and hair, and in between and directly under my breasts. Much like a medical appointment, they explained the motions they would make before actually touching me, and both women were professional and polite about the screening - even apologetic about it - but I couldn’t help but think this was overly invasive overkill.”
Despite the creepy tone of the article there’s some gems in the comments-”In that case, I demand hotter TSA officials.” I detailed my recent flight experiences here.
One of my favorite comediansDoug Stanhope had this to say on his Facebook page: “If you’re legal - always say “I opt out” and pretend to enjoy the thorough pat-down like a deviant.”

Japanese Officials Complain as US Admits to New Nuke Test
“Though the admission received very little attention in and of itself, the US Energy Department conceded this week that it had indeed conducted a “subcritical” nuclear weapons test underground in Nevada last month.
The test was the first of the Obama Administration, and will likely spark further questions about the president’s much heralded “commitment” to disarmament. Yet in Japan, and particularly in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the idea of continued nuclear weapons testing, even in limited forms, is of far more serious concern.”
I remember that “commitment” to disarmament as well. Such a disappointment. And the kicker is that US Ambassador Roos went to a Nagasaki memorial ceremony knowing full well this nuke test had happened. Gah the hypocrisy!!!

Anita Hill: No Apology to Clarence Thomas
“Anita Hill is refusing to apologize for accusing then-Supreme Court justice nominee Clarence Thomas of sexually harassing her, in an issue that Thomas’ wife has reopened 19 years after his confirmation hearings.
“I have no intention of apologizing because I testified truthfully about my experience and I stand by that testimony,” Hill, now a Brandeis University professor, said in a statement released Tuesday night.”
WTF? Why in the world would Hill apologize? And why is Thomas wife still bringing this up? It makes me think she must have some deep doubts about her husband’s “innocence”. Hill’s involving the police makes me wonder if she received threats during her time testifying. There seems to be more to this story than what’s being reported.
