I’m getting annoyed at the media again. In two days I’ve read at least three stories saying Palin made history as the first female vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket. But that’s wrong. She’s not the first. Geraldine Ferraro was. Why aren’t journalist fact checking?! Five minutes with Google would have given them the answer.
I was just a little girl then but I still remember seeing Ferraro on TV. At the time I didn’t fully grasp the significance but I do remember my mom and grandmother talking about how important she was. Her background can be read on her Wikipedia page. (Mind you, Wikipedia is not fool proof and does contain errors. But her article had a lot of linked footnotes so I thought it was a good one to link to.)
I found this YouTube clip of the Bush/Ferraro Vice Presidential debate. It’s weird to watch, partly because of the ’80s flashback and partly because the issues discussed are still the same-international terrorism, spying, sending off our soldiers to unnecessary war.
The best part is when Ferraro whips around as Bush tries to give her a little history lesson. She looked like she wanted to slap him. Hehe
