Vixen Invites: National HIV Testing Day

Parchment II

Note: National HIV Testing Day is June 27th. I had non-related RV drama yesterday and forgot to post this on time. However, getting tested for HIV is very important no matter what time of year. Thank you Michelle for contributing this important reminder.

Take Control of Your Sexual Health on National HIV Testing Day

By Michelle Sobel, STDTestExpress

Every year on June 27, National HIV Testing Day is honored with the goal of reminding people of the importance of HIV testing. And while days like these are helping to eliminate barriers to testing, undiagnosed HIV is still a serious problem in the U.S.

Consider these statistics from the CDC: more than one million people are estimated to be living with HIV in the United States. Of those, 200,000 people don’t know that they are HIV positive. Plus, about 40% of the people who become infected with HIV every year will not find out about their status until they’ve developed AIDS. This means that thousands of people are living with – and possibly spreading – the virus for years without knowing it.

With statistics that alarming, HIV testing needs to be part of an annual health routine. Early diagnosis leads to a better prognosis. With early detection, there are fewer hospitalizations and better quality of life. Plus, early diagnosis helps prevent spreading the disease to others.

In honor of National HIV Testing Day, there are clinics and testing centers throughout the country offering special events and testing. If you are in an area that does not have any events offered, you can get a free test online through our site as well.

While you’re getting your HIV test, you might consider getting tested for other STDs that often go undiagnosed. The effects of undiagnosed chlamydia and gonorrhea tend to be discounted, but can be very serious. And perhaps most critically, there isn’t a “National Syphilis Day,” an infection that can be fatal if left untreated, but is completely curable.

Unfortunately, routine STD testing is not yet part of the American medical culture, but days like National HIV Testing Day will help spread awareness and remind people of the importance of getting tested. Take control of your health, help prevent the spread of HIV and other STDs, and get tested!

From NYC Sex Bloggers Calendar:

“As the dog days of summer descend humidly upon NYC, sticky thighs and rivulets of sweat snaking down spines become everyday occurrences, we’re about to turn up the temperature a few degrees.

We’re happy to announce you can now buy and personalize your days on the 2011 Sex Blogger Calendar, with a message up to 80 characters, as well as pre-order your calendars. Purchasing days and calendars helps Woodhull Freedom Foundation in their mission to affirm sexual freedom as a fundamental human right. And we’ve made it easy for you to do, just glance to the right side bar and pick the option your heart desires.

Need some ideas for what to say on your day? Here’s a couple.

- For $25, your company can include a URL and discount code which will be visible for an entire month. Want more visibility? $100 buys you five days, which you can strategically place throughout the year, highlighting your company’s anniversary and other significant days.

- For individuals, that same $25 allows you to feature a meaningful quote, celebrate your blogiversary, send a message to your favorite model or express your gratitude to Woodhull for their dedication to fighting for such an important cause.

When we receive your payment, we’ll email you to get your days and messages.

Calendars will sell for $20 after the pre-sale period is closed, so we’re giving our early supporters a special deal on the combination of pre-ordering and buying a day, for $40 you can get a calendar and one day to personalize and save $5.

And don’t forget that when the heat of summer is finally dwindling and NYC is crisp and cool and fall, in all it’s brilliant, blazing color, is upon us, we’re going to make it sizzling again; at least on October 1st when we reveal the calendar at our launch party, once again, at the fabulous Fontana’s! So buy your days, pre-order your calendars, and book your flights and hotels. We’re going to have an amazing weekend filled with fantastic people and exciting events and we want you to be part of it all!

Sex News Roundup

Sex News Roundup

From Carnal Nation:
Teacher Sues School – After Being Fired For “Fornication”
“A teacher from Florida is suing the Christian school she used to work at – after she was fired for having sex before marriage.

Last year, Jarretta Hamilton was teaching fourth grade at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Florida, when she became pregnant. With her husband, Samuel Treftz, Hamilton went to discuss maternity leave with her principal, Jon Ennis. It was then, the couple said during a recent interview on NBC’s Today Show, that the principal said he was trying to “doing the math,” and asked the couple if they had conceived before they were married.

Once Ennis realized that Hamilton and Treftz had had sex three weeks before they got married, Hamilton was fired.”

Not terribly surprising since she worked at a religious school. However, I doubt they’re firing anyone for wearing mixed fibers and according to the Bible you’re not supposed to do that either.

From Mother Nature Network:
‘Avatar’ porn film goes 3-D
“Director James Cameron has seen plenty of parodies of his science fiction film “Avatar”, but porn giant Hustler is the first to offer a take on the mega-blockbuster in three dimensions.

The studio arm of the company has announced that the upcoming porn version of the film, titled “This Ain’t Avatar XXX”, will be presented in 3-D. Such are the production costs, that Hustler is calling it their highest-budget flick ever produced.”

Normally I’m not much into porn parodies. But blue people fucking-I’d definitely watch it. Though I never saw Avatar.

From The Examiner:
2010 World Cup prostitutes bark and a new female condom bites
“It’s estimated that roughly 40,000 prostitutes across the globe, along with 500,000 soccer fans, will attend the countries largest sporting event that goes from June 11 through July 11.

(snip)

Of course with the already high percentage of HIV in South Africa, the large numbers expected at the World Cup has caused big concern from health workers who fear the further spread of disease because of lack of condoms to accomodate the crowd.

However, it seems sex workers are not having as much sex as they initially anticipated. Instead they are complaining that a violent police crackdown has been scaring away potential customers, and business is bad, with things getting tougher by the day.”

I’ve come across several articles tonight that quote the 40,000 estimate though I can’t figure out how they got the number. That’s a lot of sex workers in one place eh? The article also talks about the Rape-aXe condom, the condom with teeth to prevent rape, that is being distributed in the area as well.

From The Guardian:
Deepwater oil spill victims, from waitresses to cabbies and strippers, plead for BP payouts
“The Mimosa Dancing Girls strip joint on the edge of New Orleans was probably not what BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg had in mind when he promised last week that the company would look after the “small people” affected by the Gulf oil spill. But then every day seems to be full of unpleasant surprises for BP.

The Mimosa’s owners have just filed a claim for compensation because the fishermen who make up their clientele can no longer afford to frequent the club.”

I figured I’d find a sex work angle to the BP spill eventually. I can only imagine how much business is down for New Orleans sex workers.

X-ray Pin-up Calendar

X-ray Pin-up Calendar

From Geek o System:
This Exists: X-Ray Pin-up Calendar
“Medical imaging firm EIZO wanted to come up with a catchy giveaway that highlighted their expertise in “high-precision displays for the examination and diagnosis of radiographs.” The result, dreamt up by German ad firm BUTTER: A pin-up calendar in which women, truly, truly bear all. As the promotion concept puts it, “Very popular among craftsmen but quite new for medics: Pin-up calendars. At last, one which shows absolutely every detail.”

I find X-rays fascinating. These pics are so enchanting. I’d snatch one of these up if I could. The one listed on Ebay already sold.

Now This Is Journalism

Obama oil spill

From Rolling Stone:
The Spill, The Scandal and the President
“Like the attacks by Al Qaeda, the disaster in the Gulf was preceded by ample warnings – yet the administration had ignored them. Instead of cracking down on MMS, as he had vowed to do even before taking office, Obama left in place many of the top officials who oversaw the agency’s culture of corruption. He permitted it to rubber-stamp dangerous drilling operations by BP – a firm with the worst safety record of any oil company – with virtually no environmental safeguards, using industry-friendly regulations drafted during the Bush years. He calibrated his response to the Gulf spill based on flawed and misleading estimates from BP – and then deployed his top aides to lowball the flow rate at a laughable 5,000 barrels a day, long after the best science made clear this catastrophe would eclipse the Exxon Valdez.”

Originally I had meant to put this link in my last News Roundup post. But I hadn’t finished reading it at the time. I just did now and wow, what a piece of journalism. This is an excellent article that puts the blame on BP, the Bush administration and the Obama administration. There’s so much info packed in this piece. I kept copying and pasting snippets but this post was getting absurdly long. So instead I’ll just strongly recommend reading the whole thing.

My one complaint is why is this kind of article in a music magazine? Shouldn’t this kind of reporting be in hard hitting newspapers? I just clicked over to CCN and their lead story is about a new movie called Prince of Persia. Arguably the worst environmental disaster in our lifetimes and they’re going with a movie as the lead and a music magazine is writing investigative political pieces?!? When did I wake up in Bizarroworld?

Our Porn, Ourselves

Our Porn, Ourselves

Found via Viviane’s Sex Carnival:
Our Porn, Ourselves
“Our Porn, Ourselves: For women who are pro-porn and all those who support us. WE are the answer to anti-porn feminists. All genders welcome.

The name is a tribute to the legendary feminist book that helped women take back control of their sexual health and sexual pleasure, Our Bodies, Our Selves.

Organizer Violet Blue found out about the upcoming anti-porn feminist conference being held in Boston next month (June 12-13), and decided she’d had enough. So did a lot of other women, and men, and people of all genders and orientations who are pro-porn and support a woman’s right to choose, explore and enjoy porn.

We women are tired of people trying to control our sexuality by telling us what we should or shouldn’t like sexually (porn) based on what someone else thinks is best for us. It’s like keeping women in a perpetual state of being children about sex. And women who say they are feminists make it worse by discounting all the women who find porn to be an empowering sex toy. Or if not, to at least give us the benefit of the doubt that we can make that decision for ourselves, thank you very much.”

One of my favorite posts was the Anti-Porn Bingo game, originally created by Furry Girl. I’ve heard many of the “reasons” listed on the game.

Debauched Diva attended the anti-porn feminist conference and is blogging about it. you can read about her thoughts here.

I’m a feminist and I like porn! I’ve even made some. ; )

News Roundup

News Roundup

From Salon:
War on whistle-blowers intensifies
“The Obama administration’s war on whistleblowers — whose disclosures are one of the very few remaining avenues for learning what our government actually does — continues to intensify.

(snip)

“They’re going after this at every opportunity and with unmatched vigor,” said Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, a critic of government classification policy. . . .

(snip)

While it’s true that leaks can be both damaging and illegal, these prosecutions are occurring without any showing whatsoever of harm to national security, and with ample evidence that they were undertaken to expose high-level wrongdoing. Some secrets are legitimate, but the balance has swung so far in the direction of excess secrecy that it’s extraordinary to watch the Obama administration move the anti-whistleblower persecution far beyond what the Bush administration did.

From Vanity Fair:
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar Defends Obama’s New Plan for Offshore Drilling
“This afternoon, reporters were invited to participate in one of the White House’s open conference calls with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Carol Browner, assistant to the president for energy and climate change. The chat comes on the heels of the president’s decision to “allow drilling along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska — ending a longstanding moratorium on exploration from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean,” according to The New York Times.

This is from March but is interesting considering the BP oil spill.

Found via Prison Planet:
‘Obama Deceives the Public’
“Daniel Ellsberg, legendary leaker of the “Pentagon Papers” in 1971, still has a bone to pick with the White House. In an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE, the 79-year-old peace activist accuses President Obama of betraying his election promises — in Iraq, in Afghanistan and on civil liberties.

(snip)

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Why would Obama reverse himself?

Ellsberg: He’s a good politician. He said what he needed to say to get elected, and now he’s just taking advantage of the office. Like any administration before, his administration caters to the profits of big corporations like BP and Goldman Sachs — even though I think BP won’t get off that easily this time. His early campaign contributions, the big corporate contributions, came from Wall Street. They got their money’s worth.

In fact, during the campaign of 2008, three candidates were backed by Wall Street: Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain. If you look at the rhetoric, the most promising was John Edwards. Too bad he turned out to be a jerk.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But Obama has been very verbal about his criticism of Wall Street.

Ellsberg: His actions are totally uncoupled from his public statements. I don’t even listen anymore. He has turned 180 degrees. Another example: His promise to filibuster a law giving the phone companies legal immunity for any role they played in the Bush’s domestic eavesdropping program. Then he not only voted not to filibuster it, he also voted for the law — against the wishes of his backers.

Red Umbrella Diaries

Red Umbrella Diaries

From Red Umbrella Diaries:
Blog Carnival Call for Posts: Coworkers and Co-conspirators
“Lots of people ask how they can be involved with the Red Umbrella Diaries if they can’t get to New York to see or perform in the show. The Blog Carnival is a way for sex workers and their allies to participate in the Red Umbrella Diaries from afar. Every month, I’ll do a carnival of pieces of writing on the upcoming event’s theme.

For the next event, which takes place on July 1, the theme is Coworkers and Co-conspirators. Here’s a little something to get you started thinking:

In every industry, quirky coworkers keep jobs entertaining, livable, or sometimes downright miserable. But what’s too much information and even sexual harassment at other jobs is just a day in the life in the sex industry.”
