NYC Here I Come!

NYC Sex Blogger Calendar.

I’m headed to NYC! Look for me at the calendar release party. I’ll be the hippie in glasses. Really, I shouldn’t be hard to find. Last time I was in Manhattan the only tie dye I saw was the shirt I was wearing.

Fearless Press will be covering the party. You can follow the festivities via the Twitter hashtag #nysbcp

Most likely I’ll take a few days off from blogging while I’m playing tourist. But I’ll write up a recap when I return.

Sex News Roundup

Beyond Sex With an Elephant, Meghan, What are you Trying to Tell Me?
“And, if you weren’t wondering before what was going on inside the Republican big tent! I mean, that serpent-like trunk is about as blatant as you can get. (And, regards the back cover: What, no cigarette??)”

I think Meghan McCain’s book cover sums up the Republican party’s warped love/hatred of sex perfectly.

From the Advocate:
Escort on Trial for Killing Client
“A trial began Monday in the case of a Craigslist escort accused of strangling a retired Bank of America executive in the San Francisco area and setting his house on fire in order to steal items including a solid gold flute.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the murder of Theodore Neff in December 2008 is known as “the Case of the Golden Flute.””

Not sure what to say on this one. But I wanted to cover it. The Case of the Golden Flute sounds like a Nancy Drew mystery.

From Susie Bright:
Susie’s Post-Mortem on Craig’s List Sex Ads
“Was it a case of Flight?— or Fight?

Craig’s List has removed its Adult Services section from their bulletin board, under pressure from a McCarthyist collection of “non-profits” (cough cough) and ambitious law enforcement magistrates.

I think their decision was a tactical retreat— with the swipe of a claw. I have no professional interest or investment in CL, nor am I privy to their private discussions. But I have a sense of “deju vu” from previous witchhunts, and a clear memory of CL’s origins.”

Preach it Susie! She has some great insight on this whole affair.

From Buzzfeed:
The Funniest Pope Protest Signs
“Nearly 20,000 people participated in an anti-Pope protest in London. Here are the 30 funniest signs.”

There are some hilarious pictures in the link above.

News Roundup

News Roundup

Found via Doug Stanhope’s Facebook page:
Quran Burning Story: This Is How The Media Embarrass Themselves
“The story of how one lone idiot, pimping an 18th-century brand of community terrorism, held the media hostage and forced some of this nation’s most powerful people to their knees to fitfully beg an end to his wackdoodlery is an extraordinary one. It’s a modern media retelling of Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying”, in which a gang of Islamaphobes, cast in the role of Addie Bundren, bamboozle the media into carrying their coffin full of malevolence on a journey of pure debasement. Let’s begin at the beginning.

(snip)

As soon as the media saw themselves a shiny shiny shining thing shining shinily in New York City, they pounced! How perfect! Something for us to talk about during the slow-news summer! I mean, we could talk about the nation’s unemployment crisis, but that would mean we’d have to talk to poor, jobless people, and there’s no currency in having access to a bunch of poors. Right away, they accepted the premise that this was a “Ground Zero mosque,” when it wasn’t. And so, by the power vested in the media, things that weren’t in fact true were accorded the privilege of being “one side of a great debate” and “an interesting point of view.”"

Great article. And Doug Stanhope’s Facebook page is fun to read.

From CNS News:
Feds Spent $800,000 of Economic Stimulus on African Genital-Washing Program
“The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), spent $823,200 of economic stimulus funds in 2009 on a study by a UCLA research team to teach uncircumcised African men how to wash their genitals after having sex.

The genitalia-washing program is part of a larger $12-million UCLA study examining how to better encourage Africans to undergo voluntary HIV testing and counseling – however, only the penis-washing study received money from the 2009 economic stimulus law. The washing portion of the study is set to end in 2011.”

When Mr. Radical sent me this link I thought he was joking. Over $800,000 for genital washing? Really?

From Activist Post:
Corn syrup producers to change name to ‘corn sugar’ as awareness over health concerns grow
“Bad press over health concerns has affected sales for the corn syrup industry and as a result the Associated Press reported today that corn syrup producers want to “sweeten up its image with a new name: corn sugar.” The article explained:

The bid to rename the sweetener by the Corn Refiners Association comes as Americans’ concerns about health and obesity have sent consumption of high fructose corn syrup, used in soft drinks but also in bread, cereal and other foods, to a 20-year low.

The group plans to apply Tuesday to the Food and Drug Administration to get “corn sugar” approved as an alternative name for food labels.”

I avoid corn syrup and am an avid label reader. I don’t care how many corn company sponsored “studies” come out stating that it’s safe-I know corn syrup is unhealthy. Actually, a friend of mine this month just tested soda on himself. He was having low energy and moods after drinking soda. I suggested (ok nagged) him about the soda. He stopped drinking it for a week and felt better. Then he had a normal soda and bam!-the low energy, upset stomach and mood crash were back within a half hour. He’s drinking Blue Sky sodas now which are made with cane sugar and is feeling healthier.

From Towelroad:
Watch: Rachel Maddow Interviews Major Margaret Witt
“Soon after Friday’s momentous ruling by a federal judge in favor of Air Force Maj. Margaret Witt, the DADT victim appeared on her very first national television interview alongside Rachel Maddow. Since her ouster, Witt has been working at a veteran’s hospital and had this to say about her upcoming return to her former military career: “I’m ready whenever they are…I can’t wait to get back to my unit, to be with my incredible unit members; they’re a wonderful group.”"

You can watch the Maddow/Witt interview at the link above.

From Raw Story:
Nationwide FBI terrorism raids target anti-war activists
“The FBI said it searched eight homes in Minneapolis and Chicago as part of a terrorism investigation on Friday, and two subjects said the agency is targeting leaders of the anti-war movement.

FBI spokesman Steve Warfield told The Associated Press agents served six warrants in Minneapolis and two in Chicago. “These were search warrants only,” Warfield said. “We’re not anticipating any arrests at this time. They’re seeking evidence relating to activities concerning the material support of terrorism.”"

What the fuck?!?! What is this the Bush years? And this is happening under Obama who remember was the “peace” candidate. This is such bullshit. How anyone can think an anti-war organization is pro terrorism is ridiculous. This is the police state exercising it’s power through fear and harassment.

Banned Book Week

Banned Book Week

From the American Library Association:
Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read
“Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.”

More info can be found here. I’m currently reading The Broom of the System by David Foster Wallace. I don’t think it’s been banned but it’s an interesting read. What are you currently reading?

Another Perspective On DADT

Another Perspective On DADT

From Bandung 1955 (found via Audacia’s Twitter):
Why I oppose repealing DADT & passage of the DREAM Act
“Although it has been over a decade since I read this passage, I return to this “scene” as I watch far too many liberals and progressives praise the possible repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) as well as the possible passage of the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act).

(snip)

Whatever the case, the inclusion of more gays and lesbians and/or undocumented immigrant youth in the U.S. military is not an ethical project given that both gestures are willing to have our communities serve as mercenaries in exchange for certain rights, some of which are never fully guaranteed in a homophobic and white supremacist country. Nor is it pragmatic. By supporting the diversification of the U.S. military we undermine radical democratic possibilities by giving the military state more people, many of whom will ultimately die in combat or develop PTSD and health issues and/or continue nurturing long-term relationships with the U.S. military, including a political affinity with its culture and goals. We will also have a more difficult time challenging projects of privatization, the incurring of huge amounts of debt, and the erosion of rights and protections in other countries—efforts buttressed by the threat of military action—which ultimately affects people in the United States.”

Audacia said of this article, “Most interesting thing I’ve read this week.” I’d have to agree. I’ve gone back and forth on DADT. On one one it’s a good ticket out if they reinstate the draft (which I believe will happen one day). And why should oppressed groups join the military when they don’t have the rights of more privileged groups?

But after talking with some gay rights advocates I really see repealing DADT as a stepping stone to more rights. It’s kind of similar to Pagans in the military. As one myself I can’t see why Pagans would join the military. My hippie self just has a knee jerk reaction against it. But I can understand how it gives more acceptance to both lifestyles in the long run. However, I keep going back to-it’s 2010 already! I’m tired of stepping stones. Can’t we just evolve?!

The author makes a ton of great points though. I recommend reading it.

DADT Coverage

DADT Coverage

From The Wonk Room:
President Clinton Says He Was Promised More Lenient Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell In 1993
“Yesterday, as Republicans successfully filibustered the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, President Bill Clinton told CBS’s Katie Couric that when he signed DADT into law, he was promised a far more lenient policy:

(snip)

“It is pretty disingenuous of Clinton, I mean he is on the right side now and he was on the right side then in hopes, but this is not about, he thought this was going to be a fine policy and would be fair and was just badly enforced,” Frank said. “This is about Clinton failed to get done what he tried to do, bless his heart he tried to do it. At a certain point he stopped spending political capitol and he lost. And since the end of his presidency in [19]98, [19]99, he’s been saying ‘the policy if out of whack, we should get rid of it,’ but he’s responsible for signing into law a bad policy.”

Frank is DADT historian Nathaniel Frank author of Unfriendly Fire. On one had I can see his point. But on the other hand signing a law that had such flexibility in it’s enforcement seems like a horrible idea. Seems like Clinton’s trying to pass the blame.

A bit of RV trivia-Bill Clinton was the first president I ever voted for.

From The Rude Pundit:
What the Hell Was That DADT Vote Yesterday? (Updated)
“That was some kind of kabuki shit yesterday in the Senate on the defense budget authorization bill with the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in it. Honestly, the Rude Pundit’s having a hard time wrapping his head around this one. Sure, sure, it’s easy to say, “Those GOP cocksuckers filibustered it because they hate the gays.” And that’s part of it. But this shit was just weird. We’re left with a whole lotta fuck-you’s and not a lot of sense.”

(snip)

Fuck John McCain and anyone who said “Let’s wait for the Pentagon study.” The DADT provision said outright that there would be no implementation until after the magical questionnaire o’ justice is done being tabulated by unbiased military people. (Seriously, has anyone else’s civil rights been subject to the results of a poll?)

I love The Rude Pundit. One day I’d like the ability to rant so cleverly.

From Pam’s House Blend:
Air Force Major Mike Almy, SLDN respond to McCain interview with reporters
“You’ll recall that yesterday, Sen. John McCain was cornered by The Advocate’s Kerry Eleveld and MetroWeekly’s Chris Geidner about his outrageous claim that there aren’t any witch hunts going on under DADT after the Senate failed to break a filibuster on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

(snip)

McCain and Almy were on Rachel’s show”

There’s a great video snippet at PHB’s site.

(snip)

Statement by Army veteran and SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis:
“Sen. John McCain is either ignoring U.S. Senate testimony that showed the military was proactively seeking out gay and lesbian service members for discharge under ‘Don’t Ask’, or he is openly deceiving Americans after his shameless filibuster. Either way, McCain is grossly out of touch and factually off the mark. Air Force Major Almy testified to the Senate Armed Services Committee, where McCain was present, that the Air Force proactively went into his emails - authorized for “personal or morale purposes” while at war - and found that he was gay. Major Almy never made a statement, even after being asked by his command, to his sexual orientation. And if McCain didn’t filibuster the bill that included repeal, Major Almy also testified that he’d return back the day repeal is certified.”

McCain is such a douche. Major Almy on the other hand was quite eloquent in his interview.

From The Advocate:
Antirepeal Senator Gets Log Cabin Award
“One day after voting against debating the defense bill containing language that would have repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell,” Sen. John Cornyn (pictured, left) will receive the Barry Goldwater Award at Wednesday night’s national Log Cabin Republicans dinner Washington, D.C., according to the Dallas Voice.”

What the hell are the Log Cabin Repulicans doing?! Giving out a thank you to politicians for repressing them? Idiots.

Also from The Advocate:
Gay Reps Urge Obama to Halt DADT
“Congress’s three openly gay members, Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin, and Jared Polis, have written a letter to President Barack Obama, urging him not to appeal the federal court decision that recently found “don’t ask, don’t tell” unconstitutional.

(snip)

“To stay above the rest, to remain the most formidable military force in the world, we must innovate, change and grow,” the representatives wrote, according to an early draft acquired by AmericaBlog. “As we update our weaponry and strategy, so too must we open our policy to encourage as much cohesiveness and camaraderie as possible. In the military where lives rely on trust and determination, DADT represents neither.”"

It’s nice to see some Congress Critters show compassion and support.

Still-it’s frustrating that we haven’t evolved yet as a species. The fight for gay rights isn’t over yet? It’s 2010 already. Can’t we just repeal DADT and move on to other issues?! Like how about ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars? Remember when Obama was going to do that? Sigh.

Transamerica

Transamerica movie

I finally watched Transamerica this month.

From it’s Wiki page:
“Transamerica is a 2005 independent comedy-drama film produced by IFC Films and The Weinstein Company. The film tells the story of Bree, a transsexual woman (Felicity Huffman), who goes on a road trip with her long-lost son Toby (Kevin Zegers).

(snip)

One of the major themes of the film is the personal journey toward self-discovery, according to interviews with the director and actors.”

Wow this is a great movie! I was especially impressed by how normal they portrayed the main character Bree. It sounds so simple doesn’t it-that transsexuals are just like everyone else. One of my F2M friends is just that-he’s just a dude living his life. But too often transsexual people have been portrayed as monsters and freaks.

So it was a joy to watch this movie. Bree is a very compelling character. You want her to triumph-well at least that’s how I felt. I also liked how there wasn’t a cliched Hollywood happy ending. It’s not a sad ending by any means but it’s a realistic one.

Another nice surprise is how realistic the movie portrayed a sex change. It’s a long process-lots of surgeries, lots of doctor visits, lots of therapy and practice. A cliched movie would just have a montage and poof Bree would become a woman in three minutes. But Transamerica really showed her long journey.

It’s an impressive film and I recommend it.

Affection Book

Affection book

Seal Press sent me a copy of Affection to review. From the book’s page:
“Krissy Kneen loves sex…and she’s not afraid to talk about it. In this sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, and sometimes terrifying memoir, she traces the arc of her sexual life—from her childhood in a sexless household to the myriad sexual encounters of her young and adult life to the present, in which she is a married (and monogamous) 40-year-old woman.

Raised by a group of protective and eccentric women who expressly forbade any and every sign of sexuality, Krissy—an unusually sensual young girl—discovered early on that illicit pleasures are the best kind. Affection follows the path of Kneen’s life journey, from the compulsive sexual self-exploration of her childhood to her experiences as a young woman for whom the world is a sexual playground. Underlying the jaw-dropping details of her many sexual escapades is Kneen’s examination of how her sense of self shapes and is shaped by those experiences, and of her struggle to satisfy her own needs in the face of a limiting, and often judgmental, society.

Affection is a frank, often erotic look at one woman’s sexuality as she grows and changes in a world that continues to see only the young and the beautiful amongst us as sexual beings—and a chronicle of her refusal to conform to that misconception.”

WTC 7 Building

9/11 was an inside job.

This year’s 9/11 coverage was interesting. Much fanfare was made over the proposed Mosque and proposed Koran burnings. But what got my attention was the stories about the WTC 7 buildings.

From Prison Planet:
New WTC 7 Video Posted on YouTube
“The International Center for 9/11 Studies has posted a new video on YouTube. The footage was filmed by a news crew from a local NYC television station, and was received from NIST under the Freedom of Information Act.”

Wow, this is a pretty telling video. It looks like a bomb, or several bombs, went off. There’s a whole floor just burning. The cars on the street are burned out as if an explosion hit. I think it clearly shows the “official” version of the WTC 7 building collapse is fabricated.

At the end of the video the journalist says “Look around. This must have been ground zero where this thing blew up. Car after car after car, buses completely obliterated and burn down to the steel.”

I’ve embedded it below for you to watch:

Also from Prison Planet:
1,280 Architects and Engineers Launch Third Light Beam into NYC Night Skyline on 9th Anniversary of September 11th
“At 9:11 p.m. on the 9th anniversary of the September attacks, the members of the 1,280-strong Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth (AE911Truth) lit up the skies over Manhattan with a towering 2-billion-candlepower beam of light to raise public awareness that three, not just two, World Trade Center high-rise buildings collapsed symmetrically at near free-fall acceleration on 9/11, though only two were hit by planes. Three Beams image at www.ae911truth.org, main page upper left.

(snip)

“Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth are here to give any and all press and media all the technical support you need in order to break this story of the crime of the century,” Gage said. “The real story is not about the Islamic Cultural Center, which is a red herring fed to the media to keep New Yorkers emotionally occupied while the crime of the century — the explosive demolition of three World Trade Center skyscrapers on 9/11 — goes almost completely unquestioned.””

From the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth site:
” We are a non-partisan association of architects, engineers, and affiliates.

Our work at AE911Truth is dedicated to the victims, families and all others throughout the world affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath.

Our mission is to research, compile, and disseminate scientific evidence relative to the destruction of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers, calling for a truly open and independent investigation and supporting others in the pursuit of justice.”

They have this telling list on the site:

WTC Building #7, a 47-story high-rise not hit by an airplane, exhibited all the characteristics of classic controlled demolition with explosives:

1. Rapid onset of “collapse”

2. Sounds of explosions at ground floor - a second before the building’s destruction

3.Symmetrical “structural failure” — through the path of greatest resistance — at free-fall acceleration

4. Imploded, collapsing completely, and landed in its own footprint

5. Massive volume of expanding pyroclastic dust clouds

6. Expert corroboration from the top European Controlled Demolition professional

7. Fore-knowledge of “collapse” by media, NYPD, FDNY

Of all the 9/11 conspiracy theories the WTC 7 building seems to have the strongest evidence. No plane hit that building-why did it collapse in such a similar way as the Twin Towers? The AE 911 Truth site is trying to answer that question.
