Sex News Roundup

Sex News Roundup

From the Las Vegas Sun:
Stalled in Las Vegas, strippermobile heading out on nationwide tour
“The strippermobile is no longer trolling the Strip for customers, but in a few weeks it will be going up and down Main Street, USA.

In early January, it will become a Vegas-born — and banned — business that took its show on the road.

(snip)

Strippermobile Winter Tour 2010 will be filmed, and Beard hopes to have it broadcast on cable television. It might need to be on adult on-demand channels though, because the itinerary includes Portland, Ore. Beard says the decency laws there are lax, so the dancers will be nude during that stretch of the trip.”

I think this is hilarious and an excellent means of advertisement. Apparently the bus only drove down the strip between 10pm and 2am. If any of my readers see the stripper mobile in their city send me pics and I’ll post them.

From NPR:
Billboard Depicting Joseph, Mary In Bed Sparks Row
“A billboard at a New Zealand church depicting a downcast Joseph lying beside Mary in bed and the heading “God is a hard act to follow” provoked more than the intended reconsideration of the meaning of Christmas.

The sign was defaced by a paint-wielding vandal just hours after it was erected Thursday outside the St. Matthew-in-the-City Anglican church in Auckland, and triggered passionate and sometimes angry debate on talk radio and the Internet.

Church vicar Archdeacon Glynn Cardy said the billboard was intended to challenge stereotypes about the way Jesus was conceived and get people talking about the Christmas story.”

This is a great billboard. If Joseph and Mary were a married couple what’s so crazy about pointing out the fact that they had sex? Mary certainly wasn’t a virgin after God knocked her up. And I’d think a deity would be a better lay than a mortal.

From Coco De Mer:
Wanker Plate
“This small vintage plate has been lovingly hand painted with the words ‘Wanker’.
These plates are one of a kind, so no two plates are exactly the same. These plates can be customized with the word(s) of your choice. Each plate comes with a wall hanging attachment already in place, so you can display it wherever you see fit!”

What a clever business idea. Thanks to Raven for the tip!

From Dispatches From The Culture Wars:
Cop Gets Off. And Then Gets Off.
“Here’s one of the more appalling cases you’ll ever hear of a cop getting off, first literally and then figuratively. Cop pulls over stripper, ejaculates on her during the traffic stop and is acquitted of any wrongdoing. The basic facts:

No one disputes that an on-duty Irvine police officer got an erection and ejaculated on a motorist during an early-morning traffic stop in Laguna Beach. The female driver reported it, DNA testing confirmed it and officer David Alex Park finally admitted it.

When the case went to trial, however, defense attorney Al Stokke argued that Park wasn’t responsible for making sticky all over the woman’s sweater. He insisted that she made the married patrolman make the mess–after all, she was on her way home from work as a dancer at Captain Cream Cabaret.”

(snip)

Park unzipped his pants, took his penis out and got an erection, she explained. “Basically, the officer made me give [him] a freaking hand job and he let me go. I’m so freaked out about it.”

(Lucy also told police, prosecutors and the jury that Park had also fingered her vagina and fondled her breasts before he ejaculated on her.)”

There are so many appalling things that this guy did I’d have to copy the whole article to list them all. Disgusting. I hate the perception that sex workers are more sexual and therefore responsible for inappropriate actions such as this. No one ever accuses accountants of being overly obsessed with numbers. Or dentists being over hygienic.

From Jakarta Globe:
India’s Transgenders Online for Love
“It’s worked for thousands of singletons the world over and now India’s transsexuals are hoping Internet dating can help their marginalized community find love.

(snip)

The site, available in English and Tamil, features six women, most of whom have had full sex change operations and are looking for “ordinary” men for a long-term relationship and even marriage.

(snip)

In November, the community claimed victory in a longstanding campaign to be listed as “others,” distinct from males and females, on electoral rolls and voter ID cards.”

The dating site is called Thirunangai. There’s only five available women now but I think it’s a good start. I’m also impressed that Indian transgenders can indentify as “others” on their voter cards if they choose it.

From CTV News:
Police seek help after sex worker attacked
“Toronto Police are asking the public’s help following the reporting stabbing and sexual assault of a sex worker in the east end.

On Tuesday, sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., the worker met a man in the area of Queen Street East and Curzon Street, police said Wednesday in a news release.

“They walked to a nearby gas station. The man then stabbed the woman in the head and sexually assaulted her,” it said.

(snip)

People with information are asked to contact police at 416-808-7474, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and a message to CRIMES (274637).”

Convicted Chicago Sex Worker Killer Gets Life

convicted killer Andre Crawford

I blogged about attending my first Dec. 17th IDTEVASW event here. That day had been a long one for me. I had driven quite a ways to get to the event. After the vigil I went back to my hotel room and got a several hours long call. It was late by the time I got off my phone but I couldn’t sleep. I had to google the names on the slips of paper I had gotten during the vigil:

Patricia Dunn Chicago, IL 1990’s
Shaquanta Langley Chicago, IL 1990’s
Nicole Townsend Chicago, IL 1990’s

I was shocked when I found out that not only was a suspect found but he had gone on trial and been found guilty this month. My Google search came up with stories dated Dec. 17th. The irony made my stomach turn. I had meant to blog about the trial earlier but just couldn’t.

Tonight was the first time since that night that I felt ready to search again.

From NBC Chicago:
Andre Crawford Gets Life Sentence
“A Cook County jury has spared the life of a Chicago man convicted in the rapes and murders of 11 women between 1993 and 1999.

A jury earlier this month took 10 hours to find Andre Crawford guilty of the crimes, convicting him on all counts. A unanimous verdict by the same jury was required for a death sentence.

(snip)

“It only takes two killings to be eligible for death. It was 11. What kind of justice is that?” asked Rena Carlock, the sister of Patricia Dunn, one of Crawford’s victims.

(snip)

Crawford was arrested in 2000 and accused in the series of rapes and murders. One victim was assaulted and left for dead on Thanksgiving night of 1997 but survived. Prosecutors alleged the victims were prostitutes and drug addicts who agreed to trade sex for narcotics but were instead attacked and then raped as they lay dying.

He pleaded not guilty, but DNA evidence linked him to the deaths of Patricia Dunn, Rhonda King, Angel Shatteen, Shaquanta Langley, Sonja Brandon, Nicole Townsend, Cheryl Cross, Tommie Dennis, Sheryl Johnson, Constance Bailey and Evandrey Harris.”

I’ll admit that I waffle on the death penalty. But 11 victims and one that survived?! And who knows if there’s more. If I had been on that jury I suspect I’d have voted for death.

Vix Pix 1

Evening Lounge

Since the Sugasm seems pretty dead in the water I’ve decided to launch a new series. One of my favorite parts of the Sugasm was picking the Editor’s Choice post. Vix Pix will feature a few posts that have caught my attention over the month. Most will be new posts but not all. Amanda’s post is an older one but it’s new to me so I’m putting it in.

Have a post you think I’d like? Send me an email at radicalvixenatgmaildotcom I can’t guarantee I’ll include you but I’ll certainly check it out. Unlike the Sugasm there’s no requirement that you repost my little list-but feel free to if you like. I just wanted a way to showcase fellow bloggers.

Vix Pix 1

Debauched Domestic Diva had a good rant this month:
December: Month of the Rant
“Tomorrow I’ll begin December with the thought in the back of my mind that I will find myself once again this year somewhere in NYC in the cold night, holding a candle while the names of the sex workers murdered in this past year will be read.”

DD writes about her reactions to Dec. 17th’s IDTEVASW. After attending my first event I can relate.

Amanda Brooks gives some great conversation tips on her Notebook blog:
Impressing a Client With Conversation
“Although I touch on the value of good conversation in Book 1: The Foundation, I don’t go into a lot of detail on building your conversational skills. There are no “tricks” to good conversation: listen and when you say something – have something to say.

Having something to say might be a problem for some girls. Successfully conversing with someone several years older than yourself and with much more life experience requires that you feed your mind. If you feed your mind a diet of tabloid magazines and TV reality shows, you’re not going to offer much that will interest or entertain your client.”

Much of her advice applies to PSOs as well as escorts. People often think I only talk about sex. But more often than not I’ll chat with my clients before the fantasy begins. I especially like her point about specialized knowledge. I may not know about the latest hip TV show but I know a lot about solar power and splitting wood. Many of my big city clients love to hear about my off grid lifestyle.

The only thing I’d tweak about her article is the news links because I love my liberal, often paranoid, news sources. ; )

One of Modern Hooker’s last strips for Carnal Nation:
Death Sentence for Marcia
“In May, 2009, Arizona prison inmate Marica Powell was servign a 27 month sentence on prostitution charges when she was left outside in a “holding cage” in the 107 degree Arizona sun without shade or water, and died.”

I love MH’s comic strip. She does an excellent job of stirring up emotion in a small number of panels. This strip was both sad and upsetting. I’m shocked about that police report form and am determined to find a picture of one!

Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

John Lennon and Yoko One, War Is Over

I can’t stand Christmas music. In the days right before Christmas the Jingle Bell Rock song makes me twitch with annoyance. But there’s one song I absolutely love-John and Yoko’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over). I heard it on the radio the other day. It made me all teary because I just love John Lennon. There’s a YouTube video here.

From the song’s Wikipedia page:
“The lyric is based on a campaign in late 1969 by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, who rented billboards and posters in eleven cities around the world that read: “WAR IS OVER! (If You Want It) Happy Christmas from John and Yoko”. The cities included New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Rome, Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong. At the time the US was deeply entrenched in the unpopular Vietnam War. The line “War is over, if you want it, war is over, now!”, as sung by the background vocals, was taken directly from the billboards.”

We need more of those billboards now.

Review: Icicles Sapphire Spiral Dildo

Icicles glass dildo

The Adult Toy Shoppe sent me the Icicles Sapphire Spiral Dildo to review.

Icicles glass dildo

It’s pretty sweet! The package says it’s hand blown. There’s a little dent in the cock head-cute.

Icicles glass dildo

There’s a nice curve to the toy.

Icicles glass dildo

Check out that raised spiral:

Icicles glass dildo

Now I only partially reviewed this dildo. The oranges know this toy more intimately than I do. Why?

I’m saving this dildo for my blog anniversary contest next March. There was a twinge of regret doing this photo shoot-I kind of want to keep this dildo for myself. It’s a nice size, good weight and it’s pretty. The cute factor of a toy is important to me. Your comments and emails really mean a lot to me so I’ve been working on a kick ass contest for you and this toy will be in the give away.

This dildo is a good value at $28.99. It’s 7 1/8″ long, 6 5/8″ is insertable and it’s 1 1/2″ wide.

Solstice Giving

Solstice giving projects

For Winter Solstice I celebrated in two ways today. First up was a long walk with the dog in the woods so we could commune with nature. Then later in the afternoon I renewed my membership with the Free Speech Coalition.

I like to donate to organizations in December. Maybe it’s my version of the holiday spirit or me just waxing nostalgic about the year’s end. Either way it just seems appropriate to do this time of year. In this economy I know it’s hard to donate to organizations on top of your normal bills. But if you can donate, even if it’s just a little, here are some organizations I like:

Free Speech Coalition
“The Free Speech Coalition is the trade association for the adult entertainment industry. Our members consist of a broad range of adult businesses from producers and webmasters to manufacturers, retailers and many, many more.”

I’ve heard the FSC referred to as the ACLU of the adult industry. I think the description is apt.You don’t have to be in the sex biz to donate.

Planned Parenthood
“We are a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide.”

I’ve visited several Planned Parenthoods in several states and have always gotten excellent care. They’re the only health service that I felt comfortable enough to tell them I was a sex worker.

Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
“From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990 — well before the Internet was on most people’s radar — and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.”

The EFF is one of the most important activist groups out there. Consistently they step up to defend our freedom on the internet and for that I love them.

$pread Magazine
“The idea for $pread Magazine was conceived in New York City in the spring of 2004 by Rachel Aimee, Rebecca Lynn, and Raven Strega. Tired of seeing sex workers misrepresented and sensationalized in the media, we decided to create a space for sex workers to speak for themselves. We didn’t have any experience in publishing, but step-by-step we gathered submissions, recruited more staff, took a crash course in design software, and raised the money to print the first issue by throwing benefit parties. $pread was launched on March 15th, 2005, and by the end of that first year our unique, quarterly magazine had received the Utne Independent Press Award for Best New Title.”

The importance of a space for sex workers to speak can’t be emphasized enough. We are misrepresented and sensationalized in the media. $pread Magazine is a small magazine with a shoe string budget and dedicated volunteers. I donate to them every year.

Sex Worker Outreach Project (SWOP)
“Sex Workers Outreach Project-USA is a national social justice network dedicated to the fundamental human rights of sex workers and their communities, focusing on ending violence and stigma through education and advocacy.”

Hearing the names of the slain sex workers at this year’s Dec. 17th reminded me of the importance of supporting organization like SWOP.

An Alternative Version Of The Tiger Scandal

Tiger Woods, Golf War movie

When the Tiger Woods scandal first broke I just ignored it. A famous sports player fucked around on his wife? That’s not news. But I’ll admit that when the cuckolding angle came into it I was entertained. Still though, it’s not really news. It’s of interest to his wife of course but it’s a private matter.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way.

From The Guardian:
Tiger Woods’s cold embrace
“Tiger Woods’ self-imposed exile from golf is the most stunning – and stunningly rapid – fall from grace in the history of sport.

(snip)

The least attractive part of Woods’ persona – including all his recent peccadilloes – is his complete absence of conscience when it comes to peddling his billion-dollar brand. Tiger’s partnership with Chevron and the financial bandits in Dubai deserves far more scrutiny from the sports press than it’s received (none).

Then there was the Philippines. As detailed in the documentary The Golf War, the Filipino government, in conjunction with the military and developers, attempted in the late nineties to remove thousands of peasants from their land, known as Hacienda Looc, to build a golf course. They resisted and three of the movement’s leaders ended up dead. Where was Woods? He was brought in by the government to play in an exhibition match and sell golf (not explicitly the course, wink, wink), all for an undisclosed fee.

Whoa. The movie is from 1999 but I’ve never heard of it. Was it widely reported back then? Isn’t it a real scandal? I did some research:

From the Golf War’s site:
“When Filipino peasants resist converting their ancestral farmland into a golf resort, they face a bloody struggle against developers and their government. Tracking down both armed guerrillas and golf boosters, including Tiger Woods, the filmmakers reveal a larger, national battle over land and revolution in what the LA Times called a “bombshell of an expose.”

Peasants in a beachfront community called Hacienda Looc have been tilling their land for generations. But, the Filipino government decided to follow a U.S. Agency for International Development-funded report that recommended the area instead be used for tourism. The government illegally sold the peasants’ land for less than it’s worth to the Manila South coast Development Corporation (MSDC). To cover itself, the government later claimed that this fertile mountainous area and tropical paradise was not suited for agriculture. Fil-Estate Land, Inc. is working with the MSDC to develop the Hacienda Looc land into a four-course golf and tourist resort.

When the peasants who live on the land learned of this takeover, they formed an organization called Umalpas-Ka, a chapter of the larger national peasant federation KMP. The developers are working in collusion with the military, as well as with national and local politicians. Meanwhile, three peasant opponents of the golf course construction have been killed. Consequently, many peasants have supported the New People’s Army’s offer to protect their families and their land.”

My Google-fu couldn’t find a film trailer. But I did find a transcript of the film here.

Sex Worker Candlelight Vigil

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

This Dec. 17th was my first time at an International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers event. It was a somber event but also an inspiring one. I cried, as did others in attendance. But I left with the hope that comes from activist solidarity.

We sex workers have much work to do but we do have each other.

At tonight’s event a bowl was passed around with the victims’ names printed on slips of paper. We took turns saying their names aloud so we could all honor their memory. I drew out the following names:

Patricia Dunn Chicago, IL 1990’s
Shaquanta Langley Chicago, IL 1990’s
Nicole Townsend Chicago, IL 1990’s

I want to research these fallen sex workers. I hope to learn their stories and to write about them. One of the women tonight said “please don’t forget me” after reading her slips of paper. By writing about these women I hope to honor their memory and to raise awareness of violence against sex workers.

Fire Imp

John Unger's Fire Imp

My Fire Imp came last week. I had bought it to support John Unger’s legal fund.

I debated whether to get a painted one. In the end I went for the plain steel. There used to be a local artist that made funky scultures that she never painted. The more they rusted the cooler they looked. I figure the more the Imp rusts the cooler it will look as well.

A side view:

John Unger's Fire Imp

Back view:

John Unger's Fire Imp

He signed the bottom.

John Unger's Fire Imp

The sculpture is 9.5″ high by 9″ wide. The nut is the best part. It makes me think about how our machines will eventually corrode and fade back into nature.

You can see more of John’s art at his site.
